Below are some of the applications that we use and recommend. Most are low-cost or no-cost to use. In addition to what is listed below there is a public download (FTP) area our clients use to upload and recommend other software utilities.

Office Suite Software
OpenOffice.org
This open source productivity suite works a lot like Microsoft Office, and can read and write Microsoft file formats. Its feature-list is quite complete, and we find that most Microsoft Office users take to it easily. The application runs well on Windows and Linux, but a bit awkwardly on Mac. It also includes a couple unusual features not in Microsoft Office.
Internet Software
PuTTY
A great freeware telnet/SSH client package - also includes PSCP and PSFTP, bringing your Windows machine into the world of robust secure file transfers.
Mozilla Firefox
Firefox is the leading open-source web browser. We now recommend that all our clients user Firefox when practical. Compared to Internet Explorer, it is far more secure; it offers excellent built-in pop-up control and cookie control; and we love its extensible search toolbar.
Mozilla Thunderbird
We also like the mail reader. We don't recommend it for all clients, but for those who need its reliable IMAP capabilities and robust spam filtering, it is unparalleled.
Remote Control Software
RealVNC
Fully interact with one computer desktop using a simple program (the "VNC viewer") on another computer desktop anywhere on the Internet. It interoperates between Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and many other systems. RealVNC is a great administration and troubleshooting tool.
LogMeIn
LogMeIn Free gives you fast, easy remote access to your PC.
Compression Software
WinZip
Winzip is a windows data compression utility that focuses on the Zip data compression format for all Windows users.
WinRar
WinRAR provides the full RAR and ZIP file support, can decompress CAB, GZIP, ACE and other archive formats.
Anti-Virus Software
AVG - Free
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is one of the most popular solutions to provide basic security protection for home and non-commercial users.
BitDefender
Provides customers with a more effective way to secure and manage their most valuable asset: Information.
Spyware Software
Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware 2007 is a multi-component detection and removal utility, provides you with advanced protection against spyware that secretly attaches and takes control of your computer.
Spybot Search & Destroy
Spybot is another spyware/adware remover, with an "immunize" feature that can protect you from a range of threats. There is no cost to download and use the application.
Windows Defender
Windows Defender detects and removes known spyware from your computer, which helps make your Internet browsing safer.
